Sciatica has been afflicting people since antiquity. The first known use of the term sciatica is dated from the year 1451 and has likely been around for a long time before then. Some estimates claim that nearly 40% of all people have Sciatica at some point in their lives. That’s over 44,000 people right here in Dallas, TX! Sciatica is most common in men between the ages of 40 and 60.

Sciatica is named after the sciatic nerve pathway, where the pain travels along. Sciatic pain is known as a shock-like shooting pain pulsing rapidly down the nerves of the leg. The pain can travel either down the back, front or side of the leg and down into the foot. Sciatica typically appears suddenly, usually following heavy lifting or other some other physical strain, but cases in which the pain appears gradually aren’t unheard of.

Spinal disc herniation is the most frequent cause of Sciatica, making up about 90% of all cases. This happens when one of the protruding discs presses against the root of the lumbar or sacral nerve. Smoking and obesity can contribute to Sciatica, as can physical sports or weightlifting.

HOW WE CAN TREAT YOUR SCIATICA

PEAKiropractic Chiropractic Treatment 1 1Some in the medical field recommend pain medication or muscle relaxers and simply waiting for the pain to go away. In addition to the hazardous side effects of pain medication, this method is hardly proactive. Other treatments include surgery, which may be effective in relieving short-term pain, but brings along with it a long recovery time and more pain from the surgery itself. Surgery has also shown itself to be ineffective as a long-term solution, as sciatica pain has returned in some patients after their surgery.
